Every assignment begins with a technical review. We confirm the material or product specification, specimen orientation, applicable test method, acceptance criteria and reporting requirements before testing begins. This helps prevent unsuitable specimen preparation, unnecessary testing and comparisons against the wrong material grade or code.
Mechanical Testing Capabilities
Mechanical testing measures how a material responds to load, deformation, impact or other specified conditions. Depending on the material, component and governing requirement, our services may include:
- Tensile testing to determine ultimate tensile strength, yield behaviour and elongation when the specimen and measurement arrangement permit.
- Guided bend and nick-break testing for weld procedure and welder qualification coupons.
- Charpy V-notch impact testing to evaluate absorbed energy at the specified test temperature.
- Hardness testing, including laboratory and selected field measurements, using the method required by the specification.
- Pull and proof-load testing for suitable anchors, fasteners and assemblies under an agreed test arrangement.
- HDPE material and fusion-joint testing for applicable pipe, coupon and weld-quality requirements.
Testing is performed using suitable laboratory equipment such as a universal testing machine, pendulum impact tester and hardness-testing equipment. Equipment selection, capacity and measurement range are confirmed against the requested test before work is accepted.
Metallurgical and Material Verification
Mechanical results often need to be considered together with material structure, composition or weld condition. Kheeran Offshore can coordinate metallurgical examination, macro examination, microstructure review, hardness mapping, ferrite measurement and positive material identification or chemical-composition verification where applicable.
For a failure investigation, we agree the sequence before cutting the component. Preserving the fracture surface, service history, sample location and orientation can be essential to obtaining a useful result. The final scope may combine visual examination, NDT, mechanical testing, metallography and material verification.
Standards and Project Requirements
Work may reference ASTM, ISO, ASME, API, AWS or an approved client specification. Common examples include ASTM E8/E8M or ASTM A370 for metallic tensile testing, ASTM E23 or ISO 148-1 for Charpy impact testing, applicable ASTM hardness methods, ASME Section IX or AWS requirements for welding qualifications, and ISO 13953 for destructive testing of polyethylene butt-fusion joints.
A test-method standard does not always contain the acceptance limits for the finished product. The material specification, construction code, drawing or project document may provide the controlling values. Our quotation and report identify the documents and criteria supplied for the assignment.
Sample Information We Need
Before sending a sample, provide the material grade, product form, dimensions, heat or batch identification, weld identification, drawing, requested test, specimen orientation and governing specification. For finished components or anchors, also provide the required load, gripping arrangement and whether testing is intended as a proof test or a test to failure.
Specimen quantity and dimensions depend on the governing document. If a full-size item cannot be tested directly, machining may be required. Results represent the specimens submitted and do not automatically establish conformity of an entire batch unless the sampling plan and applicable specification support that conclusion.
Traceable Reporting and Turnaround
Reports identify the submitted sample, test method, relevant equipment, measured results and stated acceptance criteria. Photographs, graphs or observations are included when they are part of the agreed scope. Any limitation affecting interpretation is stated clearly.
Turnaround depends on specimen preparation, test temperature, quantity and the required standard. We confirm the expected schedule after reviewing the sample information. Urgent work may be accommodated when equipment, technicians and specimen preparation are available.
